Guide on what to do in Rome in spring
Visit the municipal rose garden at the height of its bloom
When one thinks of spring, the image that immediately comes to mind is of flowers blooming, so why not visit a place where you can enjoy these wonders of nature?
The municipal rose garden is definitely one of the places to visit in Rome in spring, both for the variety of roses present and for the beautiful views of the Palatine Hill, the synagogue and the Altar of the Fatherland. The rose garden, located on the Aventine Hill, is home to about 1,100 species of roses from around the world. It was created in 1950 by Countess Mary Gailey Senni, the wife of an Italian count who moved to the Bel Paese for love.
This place hides some very interesting curiosities; did you know that from 1645 to 1934 the Jewish cemetery stood there? The plan of the municipal rose garden recalls the shape of the Menorah, the Jewish seven-branched candelabra, while the stele at the entrance is a dedication to the Jewish community that later moved its cemetery to the Verano.
The Botanical Garden of Rome during the blossoming of the cherry trees
In the neighborhood of Trastevere stands the wonderful Botanical Garden of Rome which during the first two weeks of April sees the beginning of a wonderful spectacle: The blossoming of the cherry trees in the Japanese garden.
Hanami is the Japanese word for this ritual. Its meaning represents the transience of life both in reference to the delicacy of the cherry petals but also because of the unpredictability of its blossoming. In addition to the Japanese Garden, you will find many other wonderful things to see in the Botanical Garden such as the Butterfly House.
Tiber boat trip
Have you ever thought of visiting Rome in the spring aboard a boat? With boat tours discover the wonders of the capital from a decidedly original point of view.
You can leave from Sant’Angelo Pier to sail the Tiber Island to Castel Sant’Angelo, or from Marconi Bridge to the excavations of Ostia Antica, Trajan’s harbor, and the mouth of the Tiber at Fiumicino. For more information go to the Rome’s official tourist website.
